The Best Amazon Listing Optimization Tool for 2026 (And the Free Ones Worth Using)
If you want one Amazon listing optimization tool and nothing further to read, buy Helium 10. It is the only mainstream subscription that covers the whole chain in one place: Cerebro pulls the keywords, Listing Builder and Scribbles turn them into a title and bullets, Listing Analyzer scores what you wrote, and Index Checker confirms Amazon actually indexed it. Platinum is $99/month billed yearly, or $129/month billed monthly, and the Chrome extension is free if you want to look at the data before paying anything — prices read off Helium 10’s own pricing page on 2 August 2026.
Our single pick for the whole listing workflow
That is the answer for most people. Three things complicate it, and they are the reason this page is longer than one line.
First, the cheapest genuinely useful listing tools are Amazon’s own, and they are free. If you have Brand Registry and one or two listings, you may not need to spend anything at all. Second, listing optimization is five different jobs, and buying the wrong one wastes money — the tool that writes your bullets is not the tool that tells you Amazon ignored them. Third, the job itself has changed: Amazon now reads listings semantically rather than matching strings, and only a couple of tools have shipped anything real in response.
The short answer, three ways
| If you are… | Buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A seller who wants one tool and no further decisions | Helium 10 | Covers keyword research, writing, scoring and indexing verification in one subscription |
| Trying to spend nothing | Amazon’s own stack | Listing Quality Dashboard, generative listing creation, Brand Analytics and Manage Your Experiments — free, and better than most paid graders |
| Chasing the AI-search angle specifically | SmartScout | Its AI Scorecard grades a listing against Amazon’s COSMO model; nothing else on the market does this openly |
| Writing two listings a year | Nothing | Amazon’s free tools plus an hour of care will beat a subscription you barely open |
The job changed: Amazon reads listings semantically now
This is the part almost every roundup in this category still misses, and it is the reason a 2023 listing checklist is quietly out of date.
COSMO, in plain terms
In June 2024 Amazon researchers presented COSMO at SIGMOD — a large-scale commonsense knowledge graph built from shopper behaviour and served inside Amazon’s search stack. Rather than matching a query string against the words in your listing, COSMO links products to audiences, use cases, capabilities and purchase contexts through typed relations. Rufus, the shopping assistant customers actually talk to, sits on top of that layer.
The practical consequence is unglamorous. Amazon has been getting steadily better at answering “something to keep a toddler busy on a long flight” without that phrase existing anywhere on the page. A listing that reads like a keyword pile has less to offer a system built to reason about intent than a listing that plainly states who the product is for, what job it does, what its limits are, and when it gets used.
That does not retire keyword research. Exact-match terms still index, still rank and still drive PPC. It does mean the old trick of cramming every variant into the backend and calling it optimization has a shrinking return, while writing that answers real questions has a growing one.
What the tools have actually shipped
Two vendors have built something concrete on this, and it is worth knowing exactly what each is.
SmartScout’s AI Scorecard is the more interesting of the two. SmartScout says it reverse-engineers COSMO’s logic to audit any ASIN against four vectors it names as functional intent, audience specification, capability constraints and contextual relevance. The output is a letter grade with an analyst verdict, a five-point radar covering identity and clarity, usage and context, value proposition, product details and trust, plus a fifteen-point breakdown scored across your title, bullets, description and images. SmartScout does not publish which plan includes it — its own page routes you to a demo — so treat the tier as unknown until you ask. Checked 2 August 2026.
Helium 10’s AI Listing Builder integrated with keyword research is the other, and it is a Diamond line item: $279/month billed yearly, or $359/month billed monthly. That is a real step up from Platinum, and worth being clear-eyed about — you are paying roughly $180 a month more for an AI drafting layer plus Helium 10’s ad automation, profit and loss reporting, and its MCP server.
Amazon itself has shipped the most of anyone, free. Its generative listing creation writes titles and attributes from a short description, an image or a website URL; Enhance My Listing proposes fixes to existing content; there are bulk, A+ content and video generators alongside. Amazon says more than 900,000 selling partners have used these tools and that sellers accept the output with little or no editing about 90% of the time.
The caveat worth stating
Nobody outside Amazon can verify how COSMO weights anything. A vendor scoring your listing against a reverse-engineered model is producing an informed opinion, not a measurement. Treat any COSMO or Rufus score as a checklist that happens to be pointed at the right things — useful for finding what you left out, useless as a number to chase. The only real feedback loop is an A/B test, and Amazon gives you that one free.
Listing optimization is five jobs. Buy for the one that is stuck.
The single most expensive mistake in this category is buying a tool for a job that was never the bottleneck. Here is the honest map.
| The job | What it means | Best paid tool | Free route |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Keyword research feeding the listing | Finding the terms worth targeting, and what competitors rank for | Helium 10 Cerebro; SmartScout Rank Maker | Amazon Brand Analytics, if you have Brand Registry |
| 2. Writing title, bullets, description, backend | Turning that list into copy a human and a knowledge graph both understand | Helium 10 Listing Builder and Scribbles | Amazon’s generative listing creation and Enhance My Listing |
| 3. Indexing verification | Confirming Amazon actually associated those keywords with your ASIN | Helium 10 Index Checker | Manual search by ASIN plus keyword, one term at a time |
| 4. A/B testing | Proving a change made money rather than assuming it did | None worth buying for this | Manage Your Experiments — free, Brand Registry required |
| 5. Images and A+ content | The half of conversion that is not text | Amazon’s own A+ and video generators | Same, plus a designer |
1. Keyword research feeding the listing
This is upstream of listing work, and it is where most of the value is. Helium 10 Cerebro takes a competitor ASIN and returns the keyword set behind it; Magnet expands from a seed term. SmartScout’s Rank Maker does the reverse-ASIN job with a different data slant. If this is genuinely your bottleneck, you want our best Amazon keyword research tools guide rather than this page.
2. Writing the listing
Helium 10 splits this in two. Listing Builder walks you through a complete listing and generates AI drafts; Scribbles is the one experienced sellers actually live in, colour-coding which of your target keywords have made it into the copy and which are still missing as you type. It is a manual tool and better for it. Data Dive sits one level up: it does not write copy, it decides what the copy should prioritize, which matters once you are optimizing repeatedly rather than occasionally.
3. Indexing verification — the step nobody covers
Here is the gap in every other roundup in this category. You can write a perfect listing, target the right terms, and still be invisible, because Amazon has decided a keyword is not relevant to your product and has not indexed you for it. No amount of ad spend fixes that.
Helium 10’s Index Checker answers it in about 30 seconds, in bulk, returning Traditional, Field-ASIN and Storefront status per keyword. If the cumulative column is checked, you are searchable. If your money keywords come back unindexed, that is your afternoon’s work, and it outranks any amount of bullet polishing. Two honest caveats: it starts at Platinum, so there is no free route to it, and Jungle Scout has no equivalent at all.
4. A/B testing
Do not buy anything for this. Amazon’s Manage Your Experiments tests two versions of your title, main image, bullets, description or A+ content against live traffic, and it is free. You need a Professional selling account, Brand Registry, the Brand Representative role, and enough traffic on the ASIN for the result to mean anything. That last condition is the one that disqualifies most sellers, and no third-party tool can fix it for you.
5. Images and A+ content
Largely not a software problem. Amazon’s own A+ content and video generators are free and reasonable; the ceiling here is set by photography and by whether your A+ modules answer objections. A listing tool will not help. A better main image will.
Why Helium 10 is the single pick
It wins on coverage, not on any individual tool. Nothing else lets you go from a competitor ASIN, to a keyword set, to a drafted listing, to a quality score, to a confirmation that Amazon indexed it, without leaving one subscription.
On Platinum ($99/month billed yearly, or $129/month billed monthly) you get the working set: Cerebro and Magnet for keywords, Listing Builder and Scribbles for writing, Listing Analyzer for scoring a listing from 1 to 10 against Amazon’s best practices and benchmarking up to ten ASINs at once, and Index Checker for verification. Helium 10 pitches Platinum at sellers doing $0 to $100K in yearly sales.
On Diamond ($279/month billed yearly, or $359/month billed monthly) you add the AI Listing Builder wired into keyword research, long-term keyword trend analysis, ad automation, profit and loss reporting, and the MCP server that connects Helium 10 data to AI tools. Buy Diamond for the operating tools, not for the listing ones. If listing work is your only reason for subscribing, Platinum is the right tier and the extra $180 a month is not doing anything for you.
Full plan detail is in our Helium 10 pricing breakdown and the Platinum vs Diamond comparison, and there are two verified codes on our Helium 10 coupon page if you have already decided.
Pros
- The only subscription covering keyword research, writing, scoring and indexing verification in one place
- Index Checker has no real equivalent elsewhere — and indexing failures are invisible without it
- Scribbles is the best manual keyword-placement tool in the category
- The Chrome extension is free, so you can judge the data before subscribing
- Listing Analyzer benchmarks up to ten competitor ASINs at once
Cons
- The floor is $99/month billed yearly — there is nothing cheap since Starter was retired
- The AI listing drafting wired into keyword research is a Diamond feature, not a Platinum one
- No no-cost route to the listing tools — Index Checker and Scribbles both need a paid plan
- Nothing here scores a listing against Amazon's semantic retrieval the way SmartScout's Scorecard tries to
- Overkill if you have one or two listings and Brand Registry
“Free Amazon listing optimizer”: what actually exists
A lot of people searching this category want a free tool, so here is the honest version rather than a funnel into a paid one.
Amazon’s own tools are free, and they are the best free option
None of this is a trial. It is included with a Professional selling account, which Amazon prices at $39.99 a month plus selling fees.
- Listing Quality Dashboard — Inventory, then Manage all inventory, then Listing Quality Dashboard (or Inventory, then Improve Listing Quality). It flags missing and weak attributes per ASIN and sorts by pageviews and sales, so the highest-value fixes surface first. This is the closest thing to a free listing grader that is not trying to sell you something.
- Generative listing creation and Enhance My Listing — drafts titles, attributes, bullets and descriptions from a short description, an image or a URL, and proposes improvements to listings you already have. You accept, edit or reject each suggestion.
- Brand Analytics — free with Brand Registry, and the only genuine first-party keyword data anyone gets. Search Query Performance walks impressions through clicks, cart adds and purchases for your own catalogue; Top Search Terms gives real search frequency rank. Our Brand Analytics guide covers the reports in full.
- Manage Your Experiments — free A/B testing on titles, images, bullets, descriptions and A+ content. Brand Registry and a Professional account required.
Helium 10’s free Chrome extension
Helium 10 does not merchandise a free plan — its pricing page listed Platinum, Diamond and Enterprise only when we checked it on 2 August 2026. What it does give away is the Chrome extension, which Helium 10 states in-product has over 1.2 million users, plus a set of standalone calculators. The extension surfaces demand and revenue estimates straight off an Amazon search page, which is useful, but it does no listing work: Index Checker, Scribbles and Listing Analyzer are all paid. Our Helium 10 free tools guide sets out what the free route actually covers. If you are pre-revenue, that is where to start — a 20% code on a $99 plan is still $79.20 leaving your account every month.
SmartScout has no free plan
Be precise about this one, because a great many pages are not. SmartScout runs a 7-day money-back guarantee, not a free trial — card required up front, and you claim the refund afterwards if it is not for you. The genuinely free entry points are its Chrome extension and a one-off brand report that needs no card. Verified 1 August 2026. Our SmartScout free trial page explains where the “free trial” claim came from and why it is wrong.
What a “free listing optimizer” usually turns out to be
Search the phrase and you will mostly find three things, none of them a tool:
- A grader as lead magnet. Paste an ASIN, receive a score and a list of problems, then create an account to see the fixes. The score is real enough; the product is your email address.
- A trial with a card gate. Free for seven or fourteen days, billing thereafter unless you cancel. Fine, if you know that going in.
- A free tier of a paid suite with caps tight enough that a single serious listing exhausts them.
The honest summary: free is genuinely enough when you have Brand Registry, a small catalogue and time. Amazon’s stack drafts, flags gaps and tests properly, and it costs nothing above the selling plan you already pay for. Free stops being enough at exactly three points — when you need competitor keyword data, because Amazon will never show you what other people rank for; when you need bulk indexing verification, because checking terms one at a time by hand does not scale; and when you are doing the same job across dozens of ASINs, because the free tools are built for one listing at a time.
The alternatives worth knowing about
SmartScout — the diagnostic, not the builder
SmartScout is the more interesting tool in this category right now and the weaker execution suite. Its AI Scorecard is the only openly COSMO-oriented listing audit on the market, and its AI Listing Architect generates titles, bullets, descriptions and backend keywords from keyword data. SmartScout’s plan cards list an AI Listing Creator from Essentials, at $97/month, with the deeper competitive intelligence at Business, $187/month; the Scorecard’s own page does not state a tier. Buy SmartScout for market and brand intelligence, and take the listing tooling as a bonus — that is the framing in our SmartScout review and it has not changed.
Jungle Scout — simpler, and missing a step
Jungle Scout’s listing builder is friendlier and its learning curve is shorter. The Starter plan is $49/month, or $29/month billed yearly, and Growth Accelerator is $79/month, or $49/month billed yearly, checked 2 August 2026. The gap that matters for this page: no index checker. You can write a listing in Jungle Scout and have no way of knowing whether Amazon indexed it. Our Jungle Scout review has the wider picture.
Data Dive — for people who optimize repeatedly
Data Dive is not a writer. It is the layer that decides what the writing should prioritize, and it earns its keep when you are optimizing at volume rather than launching once a quarter. Skip it below roughly five listings; Helium 10’s bundled tools are enough at that scale. See Data Dive pricing if it sounds like your problem.
SellerSprite — the data-forward alternative
Worth a look if you want a more data-heavy angle than a broad suite gives and you are not tied to the Helium 10 ecosystem. Our SellerSprite review covers the fit.
What to buy at each stage
- One or two listings, Brand Registry, no budget. Amazon’s free stack only. Listing Quality Dashboard for gaps, generative listing creation for drafts, Manage Your Experiments for proof. Add nothing until one of the three free-stops-being-enough conditions above applies to you.
- Launching, and competing. Helium 10 Platinum. Cerebro for the keywords, Scribbles for placement, Index Checker before you spend a penny on ads.
- Optimizing a catalogue. Helium 10 Platinum plus Data Dive, if the bottleneck is deciding what to prioritize across many listings rather than writing any one of them.
- Worried about AI search specifically. Helium 10 for execution, SmartScout for the Scorecard diagnosis. Ask SmartScout which plan includes it before you subscribe.
- Already at scale, running ads. Helium 10 Diamond, but buy it for the ad automation and reporting. The listing tooling is not what justifies the jump.
If the bottleneck turns out to sit one step earlier, compare the options in our best Amazon keyword research tools guide, or step back to the parent roundup of the best Amazon seller tools.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best Amazon listing optimization tool?
Helium 10, for most sellers. It is the only mainstream subscription that covers the whole chain in one place: Cerebro for the keyword research that feeds the listing, Listing Builder and Scribbles for writing it, Listing Analyzer for scoring it, and Index Checker for confirming Amazon indexed it. Platinum is $99 a month billed yearly or $129 billed monthly, checked on Helium 10's pricing page on 2 August 2026.
Is there a free Amazon listing optimizer?
Yes, but the good ones are Amazon's own. The Listing Quality Dashboard in Seller Central flags missing and weak attributes for free, Amazon's generative AI listing creation and Enhance My Listing draft and improve copy at no cost, and Manage Your Experiments runs real A/B tests free if you have Brand Registry. Helium 10's Chrome extension is free too, but it does demand research rather than listing work. Most third-party tools advertised as free listing optimizers are graders that show a score and gate the fix behind a signup.
What does a listing optimization tool actually do?
Five separate jobs, and no single tool owns all of them well. Keyword research that feeds the listing, writing the title, bullets, description and backend terms, verifying that Amazon indexed those keywords, A/B testing the result, and producing images and A+ content. Work out which one is stuck before you buy anything, because the answer changes with the bottleneck.
Does Amazon's COSMO change how I should write listings?
It changes what you write, not how much. COSMO is Amazon's commonsense knowledge graph, presented by Amazon researchers at SIGMOD in 2024, and it links products to audiences, use cases and purchase contexts rather than matching strings. Practically, that means stating who the product is for, what job it does, its real limits and when it gets used — in plain sentences, not a keyword pile.
Which tool checks whether my keywords are indexed?
Helium 10's Index Checker, and it is the step most roundups skip entirely. It returns Traditional, Field-ASIN and Storefront index status in about 30 seconds, in bulk. There is no free route to it; it starts at Platinum. No amount of PPC spend fixes a keyword Amazon has not indexed you for.
Is Helium 10 or SmartScout better for listing optimization?
Helium 10 for execution, SmartScout for diagnosis. Helium 10 owns the writing, indexing and analysis chain. SmartScout's AI Scorecard is the more interesting diagnostic, grading a listing against the four vectors of Amazon's COSMO model, and its AI Listing Architect drafts copy from keyword data. SmartScout does not publish which plan includes the Scorecard, which is worth knowing before you budget for it.
Do I need a paid listing tool at all?
Not if you have one or two listings, Brand Registry, and time. Amazon's free stack — Listing Quality Dashboard, generative listing creation, Brand Analytics and Manage Your Experiments — covers drafting, gap-finding and testing. Paid tools earn their place when you need competitor keyword data Amazon will never show you, bulk indexing checks, or the same job repeated across a catalogue.
